8 Things to do This Week—Labor Day Weekend Edition

This is not a drill. For all intents and purposes summer is OVER Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.—so let’s make the most of this last weekend of BBQs and swimming pools, shall we?

After all, there’s a long and lonely winter ahead of us.

Tracy Aviary’s Vulture Awareness Day promises to teach you the importance of predator bird to our eco-system, and more importantly, a vulture-themed Dole Whip dessert and something called “Vulture Vomit Toss.” Count us in. Saturday, 10-2, 589 S. 1300 East

Utah Pride Center’s Big Gay Car Wash ought to put the fun in fundraiser. Music by Salt Lake magazine favorite Bad Brad Wheeler, food trucks and clean cars. What’s not to like about any of that? Sunday, 11-3, 1380 Main St.

What says summer more than baseball? Nothin’. And it’s your Salt Lake Bees’ last home stand. Buy yourself some peanuts and Cracker Jacks and soak in the boys of summer while you can. Games through Monday, Smith’s Ballpark, 77 W. 1300 South, SLC

Labor Day

Snowbasin Resort’s Blues Brews and BBQ goes through September, but this week’s lineup is a good one: Leftover Salmon, Amy Helm (daughter of Levon Helm) and local singer-songwriter (featured in the September/October issue of Salt Lake magazine) Michelle Moonshine are all on tap. Admission is free, and you should bring a blanket or chairs, but buy your drinks and food there—no outside food or drink are allowed. Sunday, 12:30-5:30 p.m., 3925 Snow Basin Rd, Huntsville

Labor Day

It’s a Labor Day tradition—The Soldier Hollow Classic pairs sheep and well-trained dogs to adorable—and surprisingly intense results. It’s like the film Babe, but with less pig and more bagpipes. Trust us. It’s fun. Read more about it here. Friday-Monday, 2002 Soldier Hollow Rd., Midway

Labor Day

Park City is in Utah, but not of Utah, or so they say. So, of course they celebrate Labor Day a little differently up there. Miner’s Day celebrates the town’s roots with a 5k, a running of the balls down Main Street and, even, a drilling and mucking competition. Monday, 8-6, various Park City locations

Labor Day

I like to say Oktoberfest comes early and stays late, at least based on its name—and that’s especially true up Little Cottonwood Canyon at Snowbird, where the annual event started a few weeks ago and will run through mid-October. It’s nice to go while a trip up the canyon is a cool respite from overwhelmingly hot valley temperatures—but time is running out. Prost! And polka! Saturday and Sunday, noon-6:30, Snowbird Resort

Labor Day

Oh, and there’s plenty of live music this week—Jason Mraz at Deer valley, Moon Taxi at Salt Lake Twilight, Jack Johnson at Usana, Smashing Pumpkins at The Viv—but my advice to you is to keep your powder dry for Jason Isbell at The Eccles on Tuesday night. It’ll make going back to work after a long weekend so much better.

Oh, and hey, thank your local union for the day off!
